Ronaldo's World Cup Career Ends After Portugal's 1-0 Loss to Spain

Ronaldo's World Cup career ends emotionally after Portugal's loss to Spain.

Cristiano Ronaldo left the field in tears after his sixth and final FIFA World Cup campaign ended with Portugal’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16. The 41-year-old captain, who had confirmed before the tournament that the 2026 edition would be his last World Cup, played the full match at Dallas Stadium before substitute Mikel Merino scored a stoppage-time winner for Spain.

Ronaldo came close to scoring early in the contest but was unable to find the breakthrough as Portugal battled Spain for a place in the quarter-finals. The match remained goalless until the closing stages, when Merino struck in stoppage time to send Spain through and bring Ronaldo’s World Cup journey to an emotional conclusion. The defeat marked the end of a record six-tournament career on football’s biggest stage.

The Portuguese forward finished his World Cup career with 27 appearances, 11 goals and two assists. During the 2026 tournament, Ronaldo surpassed Eusébio’s long-standing national record of nine World Cup goals and scored three times to take his overall tally to 11. He also became the first player in men’s football history to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup.

After the final whistle, Ronaldo stood motionless on the pitch before applauding the travelling Portugal supporters. Fighting back tears, he waved to the fans and then made a solitary walk towards the tunnel. The emotional scenes quickly spread across social media, with supporters around the world paying tribute to his achievements and reflecting on a World Cup career spanning more than two decades.

Speaking after the defeat, Ronaldo said he was saddened by the manner of Portugal’s exit but insisted he had no regrets about his efforts. He said he had given everything and was leaving the tournament with a clear conscience. Reflecting on his international career, Ronaldo also said Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 triumph held the same significance for him as winning a World Cup because it was the country’s first major international title.

Ronaldo’s farewell prompted an outpouring of emotional messages online, while YouTube streamer IShowSpeed, one of his most prominent supporters, was also seen in tears inside the stadium. Although Ronaldo’s World Cup career has now ended, he has not announced his retirement from international football. The Portugal captain is expected to remain available for national team selection despite closing the final chapter of his historic World Cup journey.
