Ronaldo Under Scrutiny as Portugal Prepares for Uzbekistan After DR Congo Stalemate

Dias defends struggling Ronaldo after Portugal's 1-1 DR Congo draw.

Portugal defender Ruben Dias has thrown his support behind captain Cristiano Ronaldo after the veteran forward came under criticism following the team's 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening Group K match of the FIFA World Cup. As Portugal prepares for its second group-stage fixture, Dias dismissed the criticism surrounding Ronaldo and insisted the entire squad remains united behind the 41-year-old star.

Ronaldo, who became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match, endured a difficult outing against DR Congo. The forward touched the ball only 25 times during the full 90 minutes and failed to register a shot on target, provide an assist or complete a successful dribble. His performance sparked widespread debate over his role in the Portuguese side despite his experience and leadership.

Addressing the media, Dias said Ronaldo is accustomed to dealing with intense scrutiny throughout his career and remains unfazed by external opinions. The Manchester City defender stressed that criticism should not be directed at a single player and that every member of the squad shares responsibility for the team's performances. He added that such reactions are a normal part of major international tournaments.

"Cristiano is used to dealing with media pressure in club football, the national team and major competitions. Criticism isn't directed at just one player, and we're all involved. Nothing out of the ordinary is happening because this has always been part of football," Dias said. He also described the criticism as "noise" that the team is choosing to ignore while focusing on improving its performances.

Portugal will now turn its attention to a crucial Group K encounter against Uzbekistan on June 23 before concluding the group stage against Colombia five days later. The team will be aiming to secure its first victory of the tournament after settling for a draw in its opening fixture, with Ronaldo expected to continue leading the attack despite questions surrounding his form.

Dias expressed confidence that the squad will remain focused on its objectives and not be distracted by outside opinions. He said the players are shutting themselves off from unnecessary criticism and concentrating on delivering positive results on the pitch, believing that performances in the remaining group-stage matches will provide the best response to doubts surrounding the team and its captain.
