Ricky Ponting Reveals He Endorsed Shreyas Iyer To BCCI Selectors For T20I Captaincy

Ponting backed Shreyas Iyer for India's T20I captaincy in talks with selectors.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has revealed that he strongly backed Shreyas Iyer for a leadership role with the Indian cricket team, saying he repeatedly endorsed the batter to national selectors and believed he possessed the qualities needed to captain the side. Ponting's comments came after Shreyas was appointed captain of India's T20I team, marking a major milestone in the Mumbai batter's cricketing career.

Ponting, who has worked closely with Shreyas at both Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, said he was delighted to see the batter receive recognition for years of hard work and consistent performances. According to the former Australia skipper, he had informed Indian selectors that they would not regret giving Shreyas an opportunity to lead the national side, expressing confidence in his leadership abilities and temperament.

The Australian great pointed to Shreyas's growth as a captain over the years, describing him as a more mature, balanced, and experienced leader. Their professional relationship began at Delhi Capitals, where Shreyas guided the franchise to the IPL final in 2020. Since then, he has continued to strengthen his reputation, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title and playing a crucial role in Punjab Kings' run to the IPL final under Ponting's mentorship.

Ponting noted that earning the Indian captaincy is a significant achievement given the depth of talent in the national setup. He said the appointment reflects the trust selectors have placed in Shreyas and serves as a reward for his performances in high-pressure situations. With several established stars competing for leadership positions, Ponting believes Shreyas's ability to remain composed and deliver when it matters most played a key role in the decision.

The former World Cup-winning captain also highlighted the immense pressure associated with leading India, one of the most scrutinized teams in world cricket. He said captaining the Indian side is among the toughest assignments in the sport and advised Shreyas to fully understand the scale of responsibility that comes with the role. Ponting added that he intends to personally congratulate the batter and encourage him to make the most of the opportunity.

Shreyas's elevation to the T20I captaincy signals a new chapter for Indian cricket as the team looks ahead to future international tournaments. With a track record of success in franchise cricket and growing experience as a leader, the 31-year-old now faces the challenge of translating that success to the international stage. His appointment has received support from several former players, with Ponting's endorsement further underscoring confidence in his leadership potential.
