Rajasthan Spinner Manav Suthar Earns Test Debut With 129 First-Class Wickets Behind Him
Manav Suthar earns Test debut for India against Afghanistan at Mullanpur on Saturday.
Rajasthan spinner Manav Suthar earned his maiden Test cap for India on Saturday after being named in the playing XI for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur. The 23-year-old left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder was preferred over Harsh Dubey, a selection that signals the team management's confidence in his potential ahead of India's upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
Suthar received his Test cap from Kuldeep Yadav before the start of play. The youngster arrives on the international stage with an impressive domestic record, having taken 129 wickets in 29 first-class matches. His inclusion also marks a notable milestone, as he becomes India's first specialist spin bowler to make a Test debut since Axar Patel's debut in 2021.
Apart from his first-class achievements, Suthar has represented Rajasthan in 25 List-A matches and 29 T20 games. He was also part of the Gujarat Titans squad during the IPL 2026 season, featuring in four matches and claiming two wickets. His consistent performances across formats have helped him establish a reputation as one of India's promising young spin-bowling talents.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir had hinted before the match that the team was keen to identify a potential fourth spinner ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. While he did not reveal his preferred choice between Suthar and Dubey, Gambhir emphasized that the Afghanistan Test offered an ideal opportunity to assess a long-term spin option who could strengthen India's bowling resources in spin-friendly conditions.
Suthar's development has been aided by valuable experience in Chennai's competitive TNCA First Division League, where he refined his skills against quality opposition. The young spinner has often cited Ravichandran Ashwin as his cricketing idol. Ashwin himself has praised Suthar's ability to generate significant revolutions on the ball, highlighting his spin rate and overspin as qualities that make him a highly rated prospect.
India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first in the Mullanpur Test, with Sai Sudharsan retaining his place at number three in the batting order. Suthar's debut also comes in a historic context, as this is India's first Test match since November 2010 without either Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja in the playing XI, placing additional focus on the young spinner as he begins his international journey.
