PWL Athletes Deliver Strong Show At Senior Open Ranking Tournament

The influence of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) was once again on display at the Senior Open Ranking Wrestling Tournament held in Gonda between May 10 and May 12, 2026, as several wrestlers associated with the league’s fifth season delivered strong medal-winning performances. The tournament carried added significance as medal winners secured eligibility for selection trials for the upcoming World Championships and Commonwealth Championships.

Athletes who had competed in PWL Season 5 made a notable impact across categories, reinforcing the league’s growing role in shaping India’s competitive wrestling ecosystem. Their performances highlighted how sustained exposure to high-intensity bouts against elite domestic and international opponents has contributed to improved consistency and composure on the mat. Organisers and stakeholders view these results as further validation of the league’s long-term developmental model.

In the men’s freestyle division, Sagar of UP Dominators clinched gold in the 57kg category with a disciplined display throughout the competition. In the 74kg category, Maharashtra Kesari wrestler Yash Tushir emerged champion, marking a significant return to form after a prolonged injury layoff. Tushir, a former World Junior bronze medallist, had been away from major international competition for nearly two years due to injuries to his knee, shoulder, and toe, followed by a six-month rehabilitation period. His performance in Gonda, where he defeated five opponents en route to gold, marked a strong statement ahead of upcoming global selection events.

In other men’s categories, Tigers of Mumbai Dangals wrestler Naveen secured gold in the 79kg division, while seasoned Indian wrestler Deepak Punia, representing Maharashtra Kesari in PWL Season 5, added another title to his resume by winning the 92kg category. In the women’s competition, Delhi Dangal Warriors wrestler Anjali earned a silver medal in the 62kg category, strengthening her case for consideration in the national team selection process.

The consistent podium finishes by PWL-linked athletes further underline the league’s role as a structured high-performance platform that brings together Olympians, international competitors, and emerging domestic talent. According to PWL CEO and Promoter Akhil Gupta, the league has helped athletes adapt to pressure situations at the highest level, translating into improved results in domestic and international arenas.

Season 5 of the Pro Wrestling League, held at the Noida Indoor Stadium in January 2026, featured six franchises and concluded with Haryana Thunders lifting the title. The league continues to be regarded as India’s premier Olympic-style wrestling competition and a key contributor to the country’s wrestling pipeline, with officials noting that PWL athletes have accounted for 11 of India’s 17 medals at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships, further reinforcing its developmental impact.
