Pulisic Says US Are 'Ready to Battle' Paraguay in FIFA World Cup 2026 Opener

Christian Pulisic leads USA into FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Paraguay.

United States star Christian Pulisic said the team is “ready to battle” as they prepare for their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Paraguay in Los Angeles on Friday. Speaking ahead of the match, Pulisic emphasized that the co-hosts are focused on intensity and discipline rather than flair alone, stressing that the squad believes it can compete against any opposition on football’s biggest stage. The forward added that the opening fixture would be a strong test of the team’s readiness under pressure in a high-stakes environment.

The tournament marks a major moment for the United States men's national soccer team, which is co-hosting the World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada for the first time since 1994. Expectations are high among fans and analysts, with the team drawn in Group D alongside Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey. Pulisic noted that the squad is determined to make a strong statement early in the competition, describing the group as capable of competing with top international sides if they execute their game plan effectively.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino warned that Paraguay would not be an easy opponent, highlighting their physicality, discipline, and competitive mentality. He pointed to their qualification performances, including notable wins against major South American teams, as evidence of their strength. Pochettino stressed that Paraguay’s aggressive approach and tactical organization make them a difficult side to break down, especially in tournament settings where margins are tight and errors can prove costly.

The United States is expected to field a strong lineup featuring Folarin Balogun in attack, supported by Sergino Dest, with a midfield likely consisting of Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman, and Tyler Adams. The team has shown encouraging form in recent friendlies, with Pulisic regaining scoring touch after a goal drought, adding momentum to the squad’s buildup ahead of the opener.

Paraguay’s key players include former Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron and rising midfielder Julio Enciso, supported by experienced defenders such as Omar Alderete and Gustavo Gómez under coach Gustavo Alfaro. The South American side is known for its direct style and aerial strength, making them a dangerous opponent in knockout-style pressure matches where physical battles often decide outcomes.

Despite the heightened anticipation, Pulisic reiterated that success for the United States will depend on consistency and mentality throughout the tournament rather than a single result. Pochettino echoed a similar sentiment, stating that the team’s ambition is to win every match starting with Paraguay. Both camps agree that the opener will be a demanding encounter, with momentum in Group D likely shaped by which side adapts better to the intensity of World Cup competition.
