President Murmu Congratulates Gulveer Singh For Historic 10,000m Silver

President Droupadi Murmu has congratulated Indian athletes Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur for winning silver medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, praising their outstanding performances and saying they had made the nation proud. In separate messages shared by Rashtrapati Bhavan on X, the President lauded both athletes for their achievements, highlighting Gulveer's historic milestone in athletics and Harjinder's impressive display in weightlifting.

Congratulating Gulveer Singh, President Murmu noted that the long-distance runner had scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men's 10,000 metres. Gulveer secured the silver medal with a time of 27:49.78, finishing behind Australia's Ky Robinson after remaining with the lead group throughout the race and producing a strong final-lap sprint. The President said the nation was proud of his achievement and wished him continued success in the future.

President Murmu also extended her congratulations to Harjinder Kaur, who claimed silver in the women's 69kg weightlifting event. The Punjab lifter registered a career-best combined lift of 227kg, comprising 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk, to finish behind Canada's Charlotte Simoneau. The President praised Harjinder's spirited performance and expressed confidence that she would continue achieving greater success in the years ahead.

Harjinder's performance was particularly notable as she rewrote the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice during the competition before ultimately settling for the silver medal. The result also marked an improvement on the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, reflecting her steady progress on the international stage. Her silver was India's first medal of the day in Glasgow.

India enjoyed another successful day at the Games beyond the two silver medals. Three Indian boxers advanced to the semi-finals, guaranteeing the country at least three more medals regardless of the final outcomes. The performances further strengthened India's medal tally as the contingent continued its campaign across multiple disciplines.
