Harmanpreet Backs “Strong, United” India as Pratika Rawal Eyes Semifinal Return

Harmanpreet Kaur remains optimistic as Pratika Rawal’s injury recovery becomes key before India’s semifinal clash.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has expressed cautious optimism regarding opener Pratika Rawal’s fitness ahead of the Women’s World Cup semifinal against Australia, scheduled for Thursday. Rawal, a standout performer in the league stage, twisted her right ankle while fielding during India’s rain-abandoned final group match against Bangladesh on Sunday at DY Patil Stadium. The injury occurred on the last ball of the 21st over when her foot got stuck in the damp outfield at deep midwicket, forcing her to leave the field in visible pain.

The BCCI confirmed that Rawal sustained injuries to both her knee and ankle, with the medical team actively monitoring her recovery. Harmanpreet, speaking after the washed-out encounter where India were 57-0 chasing a revised 126 in 27 overs, emphasised the team’s strong collective form and hoped for positive news on Rawal soon. “Pratika is being monitored by the medical team, and hopefully they’ll get back soon. It’s a very important game for us, and everyone has contributed,” she said, highlighting the squad’s momentum heading into the knockout stage.

In Rawal’s absence against Bangladesh, Amanjot Kaur was promoted to open alongside Smriti Mandhana, a partnership that had been thriving with Rawal earlier in the tournament. The 22-year-old has formed a formidable alliance at the top with Mandhana, providing India with aggressive and stable starts. Harmanpreet stressed the importance of carrying forward the team’s league-stage confidence, adding, “Whatever we thought we have achieved, and hopefully Pratika will also be fine for the next game.”

As defending champions Australia loom in the semifinal, India’s depth will be tested, but the team remains buoyed by its unbeaten run in the group phase despite the rain interruption. Rawal’s availability could prove pivotal against a seasoned Australian bowling attack, with the medical team’s update expected in the coming days. The match represents a high-stakes opportunity for India to reach the final and challenge for their first Women’s World Cup title since 2005.
