Pochettino Dismisses European Jinx: US Faces Bosnia in World Cup Knockout

Pochettino downplays European losing streak ahead of US vs Bosnia clash.

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has dismissed concerns over his team's poor record against European opponents ahead of its FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Speaking before Wednesday's knockout match, Pochettino described the Americans' 10-match winless streak against European teams as a coincidence and expressed confidence that his side could overcome the statistic with a strong performance in the tournament's knockout stage.

The United States has not defeated a European nation in five years, with its last victory coming in a 2021 international friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since then, the Americans have suffered defeats against the Netherlands, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Belgium, Portugal, Germany and Turkey. Despite the disappointing run, Pochettino insisted the results were not evidence of any tactical weakness against European opposition but rather reflected the quality of the teams the United States had chosen to face in preparation for major tournaments.

The hosts have enjoyed an encouraging FIFA World Cup campaign so far, opening the tournament with convincing victories over Paraguay and Australia before suffering a defeat to Turkey in a final group-stage match in which several regular starters were rested. Pochettino also confirmed that star forward Christian Pulisic has regained full fitness and is available to start after making his return from injury as a substitute in the match against Turkey.

Although the United States is ranked significantly higher than Bosnia and Herzegovina in the latest FIFA rankings, Pochettino rejected suggestions that his team should automatically be considered favourites. He pointed to several surprise results already witnessed during the tournament, including Germany's elimination and other closely contested knockout matches, saying every team reaching this stage deserved respect regardless of rankings or reputation.

Bosnia and Herzegovina reached the knockout stage for the first time in the country's history after finishing third in Group B and securing qualification with a victory over Qatar. While Bosnia coach Sergej Barbarez acknowledged that the United States entered the contest as favourites because of home advantage and the quality of its squad, he also said his players were comfortable embracing the role of underdogs and were prepared for the challenge.

The Round of 32 encounter is expected to be a significant test for both sides, with the United States seeking to end its long wait for a victory over European opposition while Bosnia hopes to continue its historic World Cup journey. The winner will advance to the Round of 16, where the level of competition is expected to intensify as the race for the FIFA World Cup title continues.
