PBKS Coach Addresses Off-Field Drama Rumours Amid IPL 2026 Losing Streak
PBKS coach responds to off-field drama rumours during losing streak.
Punjab Kings fast bowling coach James Hopes dismissed suggestions that off-field controversies were responsible for the franchise’s poor run in IPL 2026 after Punjab suffered their sixth consecutive defeat on Sunday. The loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru has left Punjab Kings on the verge of elimination from the playoff race.
Punjab were beaten by 23 runs after Bengaluru posted a formidable total and controlled key moments of the contest. Speaking after the match, Hopes admitted the continuous defeats were frustrating and said the team had repeatedly failed to seize momentum during crucial phases of games. He pointed to Punjab’s inability to create enough wicket-taking opportunities early in the innings and the loss of wickets during the chase as major reasons behind the latest setback.
Rejecting speculation about dressing-room issues or external distractions affecting the campaign, Hopes said Punjab’s downfall had been caused primarily by on-field mistakes. “I don't think any off-field stuff derailed our campaign,” he said, adding that the side repeatedly hurt itself whenever it appeared close to regaining control during matches. His comments come amid growing scrutiny over the team’s dramatic decline after a promising start to the season under captain Shreyas Iyer.

Hopes also defended left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh despite another expensive outing in which he returned figures of 1 for 43 from four overs. The coach praised Arshdeep’s attitude and commitment, saying the bowler had performed well in the latter half of the tournament despite missed chances and fielding lapses affecting his results. “He's a warrior,” Hopes said while backing the India international.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru pacer Josh Hazlewood credited his successful partnership with veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for helping the reigning champions maintain consistency during the season. Hazlewood said Bhuvneshwar’s experience in Indian conditions and understanding of opposition batters had benefited the entire bowling unit.
With the victory, Royal Challengers Bengaluru became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs and still have two league matches remaining. Hazlewood said the breaks between games would help the squad recover and prepare for the knockout stages, including Qualifier 1, where Bengaluru are expected to return with confidence after maintaining strong momentum late in the tournament.
