Pat Cummins Open to Skipping IPL 2027 to Prioritise Ashes and ODI World Cup

Cummins says Test cricket and the World Cup take priority over IPL 2027 commitments.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain Pat Cummins has indicated that he may skip the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season as he looks to manage his workload ahead of a demanding year for Australian cricket. The Australian fast bowler, one of the most sought-after players in world cricket, said international commitments would take precedence if he is forced to make difficult choices regarding his playing schedule.

Cummins acknowledged that the packed cricket calendar in 2027 could require him to reduce or even eliminate his participation in franchise tournaments. Speaking about the challenge of balancing domestic leagues with national duties, the Australia captain admitted that “something has to give,” suggesting that maintaining peak fitness for major international assignments would be his primary focus.

The 2027 season is expected to be one of the busiest periods of Cummins’ career. Australia is scheduled to play a high-profile five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in India, while the cricketing calendar could also include the World Test Championship final if Australia qualifies. Adding to the workload will be the prestigious 150th anniversary Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the defence of Australia’s ODI World Cup title later in the year.

The workload concerns extend beyond Cummins himself. Australia’s pace attack, which also features Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, is expected to carry a significant burden across formats. Cricket Australia and team management have increasingly emphasized player workload management in recent years, particularly for fast bowlers whose injury risks rise during extended periods of continuous cricket.

Cummins, who will be 33 by the time the 2027 season arrives, said a final decision has not yet been made. He plans to assess his physical condition and stress levels closer to the tournament before holding discussions with Sunrisers Hyderabad management. His comments suggest that all options remain open, including a complete absence from the IPL if that is deemed necessary to preserve his fitness.

Any decision by Cummins to skip the IPL would be a significant development for Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have relied on his leadership and performances since his arrival at the franchise. While the Australian captain remains committed to the team, his latest remarks underline the growing challenge faced by international cricketers as they attempt to balance lucrative franchise opportunities with increasingly demanding national schedules and major global tournaments.
