Ousmane Dembele Wins Ligue 1 Player of the Year for Second Consecutive Season

Ousmane Dembele wins second consecutive Ligue 1 Player of the Year award despite injury-affected campaign.

Ousmane Dembele has been named Ligue 1 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after another influential campaign with Paris Saint-Germain. The French forward received the honour on Monday as PSG moved closer to securing another domestic league title while also preparing for the UEFA Champions League final later this month. Dembele’s achievement places him among an elite group of players to win the award in back-to-back seasons, becoming the first footballer since Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2014 to accomplish the feat.

The 28-year-old succeeded former PSG star Kylian Mbappe as the recipient of the award last season after Mbappe’s run of five consecutive Ligue 1 Player of the Year titles ended following his departure to Real Madrid. Speaking after receiving the recognition, Dembele dedicated the achievement to his teammates and coaching staff. He said that although the honour was individual, every award he had won was made possible because of the collective efforts of the squad throughout the season.

Dembele retained the award despite enduring an injury-hit campaign that significantly reduced his playing time compared to last season. The PSG attacker started only nine Ligue 1 matches and played fewer than 1,000 minutes during the domestic campaign. However, he still managed to make a decisive impact by scoring 10 goals and providing six assists. While those numbers were lower than his previous season’s tally, his performances in key matches and influence during important moments helped convince voters that he remained the league’s standout player.

PSG are now on the verge of clinching another Ligue 1 title after a narrow victory over Brest strengthened their position at the top of the standings. The club currently sits six points ahead of nearest challengers RC Lens with only two matches remaining in the season. Luis Enrique’s side also holds a significantly superior goal difference, placing them in a commanding position to secure the championship. PSG will officially seal the title if they avoid defeat in their upcoming match against second-placed Lens.

The Paris club is simultaneously preparing for one of the biggest matches in its recent history after reaching the UEFA Champions League final. PSG advanced to the final following a dramatic semi-final victory over Bayern Munich, edging the tie 6-5 on aggregate. They are now set to face Arsenal later this month in a highly anticipated final. The Champions League remains the one major trophy PSG has long pursued, and Dembele is expected to play a central role in the club’s bid for European glory.

Other major awards announced alongside Dembele’s recognition included the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year honour, which went to PSG midfielder Desire Doue. Meanwhile, Pierre Sage received the award for Best Coach after guiding Lens into an unexpected title challenge against PSG. The awards reflected another season dominated by Paris Saint-Germain, who continue to maintain their position as the strongest force in French football while also emerging as a serious contender on the European stage.
