Nupur Sheoran Reaches Semis, Assures India Medal at World Boxing Championship

Heavyweight Nupur wins 4-1 over Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboeva in +80 kg to reach semifinals in Liverpool; at least bronze is secured.

Indian heavyweight boxer Nupur Sheoran clinched a guaranteed medal for India at the ongoing World Boxing Championships by advancing to the semifinals with a convincing 4-1 victory over Uzbekistan's Oltinoy Sotimboeva in the +80 kg category. Competing in her debut bout of the tournament, which features only 10 boxers in this weight class, Sheoran's win ensures at least a bronze, marking a significant breakthrough for the Indian contingent amid a competitive field.

This achievement highlights India's growing prowess in international boxing, building on recent successes and setting the stage for potential podium finishes in multiple categories.

On Tuesday, light flyweight Jadumani Singh (48 kg) and welterweight Abhinash Jamwal (65 kg) progressed to the men's quarterfinals with dominant performances, showcasing technical skill and strategic dominance. However, super heavyweight Jugnoo Ahlawat (85 kg) suffered an early exit, losing in the first round to Scotland's Robert McNulty, underscoring the challenges in heavier divisions.

Looking ahead, Wednesday's action features high-profile quarterfinal bouts: two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaisimine Lamboria, experienced campaigner Pooja Rani, and the aforementioned Jamwal. Their performances could propel India toward multiple medals, with Zareen's pedigree and Lamboria's agility expected to shine.

The Indian team, backed by the Boxing Federation of India, aims to capitalise on this momentum, drawing from rigorous training and past triumphs at events like the Olympics and Asian Games.
