Nine Injured in Kansas City Shooting Four Miles From England's World Cup Training Facility

A shooting near England's World Cup base left nine with non-life-threatening injuries.

A shooting near England's designated base camp for the FIFA World Cup 2026 left nine people injured in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday, raising security concerns just days before the start of football's biggest tournament in North America. Local authorities confirmed that all victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and that investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

According to Kansas City police, at least three of the injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while others received medical attention at the scene. Officials said no suspects had been taken into custody as of the latest update. Law enforcement agencies are continuing to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The incident occurred approximately four miles from Swope Soccer Village, the training facility selected as England's base camp during the FIFA World Cup. England's national team has not yet arrived in Kansas City and is currently preparing for the tournament. The Three Lions are scheduled to play a pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando, Florida, before moving to their tournament base.

A spokesperson for England's Football Association declined to comment on the shooting. While authorities have not indicated any connection between the incident and the World Cup, the shooting has drawn attention due to its proximity to one of the tournament's key team facilities. Security arrangements across host cities are expected to remain under close review as the competition approaches.

The episode has also renewed focus on gun violence in the United States. According to data cited by Reuters from the Gun Violence Archive, the country recorded more than 400 mass shootings in 2025. Major international sporting events often involve extensive security planning, with host authorities working alongside local and federal agencies to ensure the safety of players, officials, and supporters.

England will begin its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. The 1966 world champions will open their tournament against Croatia on June 17 before facing Ghana and Panama in their remaining group-stage matches. Led by captain Harry Kane and featuring stars such as Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice, England will be aiming to capture a second World Cup title nearly six decades after their historic triumph at Wembley Stadium.
