Nick Kyrgios Swears at Umpire, Says He Doesn't Care About Fine
Kyrgios curses at umpire, loses Wimbledon doubles first round.
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios made a dramatic return to Wimbledon on Wednesday, but his comeback was overshadowed by another on-court outburst after he directed an expletive-filled rant at the chair umpire during his men's doubles match. The former Wimbledon finalist, playing his first match at the All England Club since reaching the 2022 final, lost his temper midway through the contest and said he did not care if tournament officials fined him for his remarks. Kyrgios returned to action with a wild card entry alongside Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik.
The incident occurred during the second set after Kyrgios and Bublik had already lost the opening set and his serve was broken early in the next. As the players sat down during a changeover, French chair umpire Manuel Absolu appeared to be speaking with Kyrgios. The Australian responded angrily, shouting that officials could fine him because he did not care and describing the tournament's rules as "dumb," drawing attention from spectators on Court 17.
Despite the heated exchange, play continued, but Kyrgios and Bublik were unable to recover from their slow start. The pair suffered a straight-sets defeat, losing 6-3, 6-4 to sixth-seeded duo Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in the opening round of the men's doubles competition. The defeat marked an early exit for the wildcard pairing and ended Kyrgios' return to Wimbledon on a disappointing note.

Kyrgios has built a reputation throughout his career for his fiery personality and confrontational behaviour on court. While widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted players on the tour, he has frequently attracted headlines for disputes with officials, emotional outbursts and breaches of the sport's code of conduct. His latest comments are expected to come under review by tournament authorities.
During his memorable run to the Wimbledon singles final in 2022, where he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic, Kyrgios was fined a total of £14,500 for multiple code violations. Those penalties included fines for swearing during matches and for spitting in the direction of a spectator. His behaviour during that tournament also generated widespread debate despite his impressive performances on court.
The 31-year-old has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons, limiting his appearances on the ATP Tour. His return to Wimbledon had generated considerable interest among fans hoping to see him compete again at one of his most successful venues. However, his latest appearance ended with another controversial moment, reinforcing his long-standing reputation as one of tennis' most unpredictable and polarising figures.
