Neymar Makes World Cup Debut as Brazil Breeze Past Scotland; Vinicius Hails "Our Idol's" Return

Neymar makes World Cup debut as Brazil defeats Scotland 3-0.

Brazil received a major boost ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage as Neymar made his first appearance of the tournament during a convincing 3-0 victory over Scotland at Hard Rock Stadium. The veteran forward came off the bench in the 76th minute after recovering from a right calf injury that had ruled him out of Brazil's opening two group matches. His long-awaited return was met with loud cheers from the crowd as the five-time world champions secured qualification for the Round of 32.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti had indicated earlier in the week that Neymar was fit enough to feature but stopped short of confirming whether he would start. Instead, the 34-year-old was introduced as a second-half substitute once Brazil had established a comfortable lead. As Neymar began warming up along the touchline, supporters erupted in anticipation before giving him a standing ovation when he entered the field and touched the ball for the first time.

Star forward Vinicius Junior, who scored twice in Brazil's victory, welcomed Neymar's return and described it as an emotional moment for the entire squad. He said the experienced forward had worked tirelessly to overcome injury and rejoin the national team for the World Cup. Vinicius added that everyone hopes Neymar continues to regain full fitness and plays a decisive role as Brazil prepares for the knockout rounds.

Ancelotti praised Neymar's progress before the match, confirming that the forward had trained well throughout the week and was physically ready to return. The calf injury had sidelined Neymar for more than a month, with his participation in the tournament remaining uncertain until he successfully completed full training sessions. His availability gives Brazil an experienced attacking option as the competition enters its decisive phase.

Neymar remains Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals in 130 international appearances. He has represented the national team at four World Cups and continues to be one of the country's most recognisable footballers despite recent injury setbacks. Since suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2023, the forward has faced questions over his form and fitness, managing four goals in eight appearances for Brazilian club Santos this season.

Despite the scrutiny surrounding his selection, Neymar's return has been welcomed by teammates, who believe his experience and quality will strengthen Brazil's title challenge. With qualification secured and key players returning to full fitness, the South American giants will head into the knockout stage with renewed confidence as they pursue a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title.
