Murali Sreeshankar Clinches Historic Second Consecutive Commonwealth Games Long Jump Medal

India's Murali Sreeshankar etched his name into the record books on Wednesday by becoming the country's first athlete to win two Commonwealth Games medals in the men's long jump, securing a silver medal with a best leap of 8.09 metres. The 27-year-old, who had also claimed silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, delivered another podium finish after making a remarkable comeback from a serious knee injury that had threatened to derail his career.

Sreeshankar's medal-winning jump of 8.09m came in a highly competitive final, where Jamaica's Tajay Gayle, the former world champion, clinched the gold medal with a best effort of 8.15m. Scotland's Stephen Mackenzie delighted the home crowd by taking bronze with a jump of 8.08m, finishing just one centimetre behind the Indian athlete in a closely contested battle for the podium.

The silver medal marks another significant milestone in Sreeshankar's career and further cements his status as one of India's finest long jumpers. However, none had managed to stand on the Commonwealth Games podium twice in the discipline until Sreeshankar's historic achievement.

The medal also continues India's growing success in athletics at major multi-sport events, with Indian track and field athletes consistently producing strong performances over the past decade.
