Mudryk Cleared to Rejoin Chelsea After FA and WADA Resolve Appeal

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has welcomed the return of Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk after the Football Association (FA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) resolved his appeal against a four-year doping ban. Speaking in Sydney after Chelsea's 2-1 pre-season defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Alonso said the club was delighted to have Mudryk back and stressed that the player would receive full support from teammates, coaching staff and the club as he begins his return to professional football. Mudryk is expected to rejoin Chelsea during the club's pre-season tour in Hong Kong later this week.

Mudryk had been suspended after a 2024 drug test detected a low concentration of meldonium, a substance prohibited under anti-doping regulations at the time. However, the 25-year-old was cleared to resume his career on Friday after his appeal was successfully resolved. The Ukrainian international had challenged the ban through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, while changes to WADA's procedures during the appeal process meant that an identical test result under the updated regulations would not have resulted in disciplinary charges.

Alonso admitted the news came as a surprise but said everyone at Chelsea was pleased to see the winger return. He acknowledged the emotional and mental challenges Mudryk had endured during his lengthy absence from football, noting that the player had been unable to train with the squad or participate in competitive matches for an extended period. The Chelsea coach said the club's immediate priority is ensuring Mudryk feels included again as part of the team environment before focusing on his footballing progress.

Despite the positive outcome of the appeal, Alonso cautioned that Mudryk's comeback would be carefully managed. Having not featured in a competitive match since November 2024, the winger faces the challenge of rebuilding his fitness and match sharpness after spending months training alone. Alonso emphasized that returning to top-level football will require patience, adding that the pace of Mudryk's progress will depend on his physical and mental adaptation over the coming weeks.

Mudryk joined Chelsea from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth £62 million (approximately $83 million). Highly regarded for his pace and attacking ability, the winger arrived with significant expectations but saw his career interrupted by the doping case. His return offers Chelsea another attacking option ahead of the new season, although the club is expected to gradually reintegrate him into competitive action rather than rushing him back into the starting lineup.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi, who previously coached Mudryk at Shakhtar Donetsk, also welcomed the player's return to football. Describing the Ukrainian as a talented footballer and a person of strong character, De Zerbi expressed hope that Mudryk would be able to put the difficult period behind him and rediscover his best form during the upcoming season. With his appeal now concluded, Mudryk's focus shifts from legal proceedings to rebuilding his career and earning his place once again in Chelsea's first-team squad.
