Mohammed Ashfaq Stuns Athletics World With Record-Breaking U20 400m Run
Ashfaq breaks U20 400m record
Indian sprinter Mohammed Ashfaq created history at the World Athletics U20 Championships by breaking the national U20 record in the men’s 400m event and qualifying for the semifinals. The 19-year-old delivered a strong performance on the second day of the championship, clocking an impressive 45.81 seconds in the opening round. Ashfaq finished second in Heat 5 behind USA’s Jayden DeLeon, who recorded a time of 45.63 seconds. His performance placed him fourth overall among the qualifiers, securing his place in the men’s 400m semifinals at the prestigious junior athletics event.
The Indian athlete’s latest effort improved his own previous national U20 record of 46.05 seconds, which he had set earlier this season in April. The improvement highlighted Ashfaq’s rapid progress and established him as one of India’s brightest prospects in the 400m category. Ashfaq maintained his composure while competing against a strong international field and produced a record-breaking run at the right moment. His qualification marks a significant achievement for Indian athletics, especially in sprint events where the country has been working to develop greater depth at the global level.
However, it was a disappointing outing for another Indian runner, Piyush Raj, who failed to advance to the semifinals. Competing in Heat 6, Raj finished fifth with a timing of 47.78 seconds and ended 35th overall in the qualification standings. In the women’s discus throw final, India’s Amanat Kamboj also delivered a notable performance by finishing sixth with a personal best effort. The 18-year-old recorded a throw of 53.24 metres in her first attempt, which remained her best mark in the competition.

Kamboj’s performance added another positive result for the Indian contingent at the World Athletics U20 Championships. Her sixth-place finish in the final reflected her ability to compete against some of the best young discus throwers from around the world. The World Athletics U20 Championships provide a major platform for emerging athletes to gain international experience and compete at the highest level in their age category. Many athletes who have featured in the event have gone on to achieve success at senior international competitions.
Ashfaq’s record-breaking performance is expected to boost confidence within the Indian athletics setup, which has seen increasing success among young competitors in recent years. His ability to improve his national record on the global stage underlines his potential as a future contender in international sprinting. With the semifinals ahead, Ashfaq will aim to continue his impressive campaign and challenge for a place in the final. His performance has already marked him as one of the standout Indian athletes at the championship and brought attention to the country’s growing sprint talent.
