Mitchell Marsh Calls Zimbabwe, South Africa ODIs A Great World Cup Opportunity

Australia stand-in ODI captain Mitchell Marsh has described the team's upcoming matches in Zimbabwe and South Africa as a valuable opportunity to gain experience of conditions that could be crucial at the 2027 ODI World Cup. The defending champions are currently in Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI series before travelling to South Africa for three ODIs and three Tests. With the next World Cup scheduled to be held in southern Africa, Marsh believes the tour can help Australia's players become familiar with the conditions well in advance.

Speaking ahead of the ODI series, Marsh said the African tour would be particularly beneficial for younger players who have limited experience playing in Zimbabwe and South Africa. He noted that the conditions could have similarities to those in Australia, while also presenting different challenges. Marsh also pointed to the competitive nature of Australia-South Africa contests, saying the series would provide a strong test for the squad as it prepares for the longer-term World Cup build-up.

Australia have produced mixed results in ODI cricket since winning the 2023 World Cup. They have lost away series against Pakistan and Bangladesh in their most recent overseas assignments but defeated India 2-1 in a home series late last year. Marsh attributed some of the difficulties in Pakistan and Bangladesh to challenging playing conditions and the inexperience of Australia's squads on those tours. He said those experiences could ultimately benefit younger players by giving them exposure to demanding environments.

Marsh said Australia generally perform strongly in the conditions expected in Zimbabwe and South Africa and understand the style of cricket they want to play. He also acknowledged that success at a World Cup depends on several factors, including timing and luck, while describing the tournament as the pinnacle of white-ball cricket. The upcoming African assignments, therefore, are being viewed as part of a broader preparation process rather than simply a series of individual bilateral matches.

Australia's demanding Test schedule could also influence the composition of its ODI squads over the coming year. Marsh said several Test players could be unavailable for one-day cricket as they manage workloads ahead of an intense period of Test cricket. Australia's leading fast bowlers, including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, have already been managing their schedules carefully. This situation could provide opportunities for younger players to establish themselves in the ODI setup.

Marsh believes the combination of regular international cricket and opportunities for emerging players can help Australia build greater depth before the 2027 World Cup. With considerable cricket still to be played before the tournament, the stand-in captain said the team has time to develop its options and strengthen its squad. The Zimbabwe and South Africa series could consequently serve as important steps in Australia's preparation for defending its ODI World Cup title in southern Africa.
