Mexico Rebuilds Squad Under Javier Aguirre Ahead Of World Cup Redemption Bid
Mexico rebuilds squad under Aguirre aiming World Cup redemption.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre has ushered in a major squad overhaul as the national team prepares for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, placing his trust in a new generation of players following the disappointment of the 2022 edition in Qatar. The move signals a reset for El Tri, which failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2022 for the first time since 1978.
Aguirre, taking charge of Mexico at a World Cup for the third time, has included 13 players who were not part of the Qatar squad. Among the most notable inclusions is 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora, who could become one of the youngest Mexican players ever to feature at the tournament if he makes his debut.
Mora’s potential appearance places him in rare company in World Cup history, where only a handful of players have featured at the age of 17, including legends such as Pelé. Mexico’s youngest-ever World Cup player remains Manuel Rosas, who played in the inaugural 1930 tournament at 18 years and 88 days.

Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa also returns, marking a sixth World Cup selection in his long international career that began in 2006. However, he is currently expected to serve as backup to Raúl Rangel, reflecting the transition toward a younger core within the squad.
Mexico will open its World Cup campaign against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca on June 11, before facing South Korea in Guadalajara and concluding its group-stage fixtures against Czechia on June 24. The team enters the tournament on a seven-match unbeaten run and will play one final warm-up match against Serbia.
The announced squad features a blend of experience and youth across all departments, including Edson Álvarez in midfield, Santiago Giménez in attack, and a wide pool of emerging talents as Aguirre attempts to restore Mexico’s competitiveness on the global stage.
