Defending FIFA World Cup champions Lionel Messi is dealing with muscle fatigue and a mild strain in his left hamstring ahead of Argentina’s title defense campaign, drawing concern among fans as the tournament approaches. Team officials said Messi’s recovery timeline will depend on his medical progress, although he remains part of the squad preparing for the competition.
Hundreds of journalists and supporters gathered in Kansas City on Wednesday as Argentina held an open training session at the facilities of Sporting Kansas City. Despite the injury concern, Messi appeared at training and completed conditioning exercises separately from the main group, while the rest of the squad continued preparations.
Coach Lionel Scaloni recently announced a 26-player World Cup roster featuring 17 members of the squad that lifted the trophy in Qatar four years ago. Argentina will begin its campaign against Algeria on June 16 at Arrowhead Stadium and remains one of the favorites to retain the title.
