Mbappe's Golden Boot Dream Alive Despite France's World Cup Elimination Against Spain
Mbappe remains Golden Boot contender after France's exit.
France's FIFA World Cup 2026 title hopes came to an end after a semi-final defeat to Spain, but captain Kylian Mbappe remains in contention for the tournament's Golden Boot. Despite Les Bleus being eliminated from the competition, the French forward still has an opportunity to finish as the leading scorer after an impressive campaign that has seen him score eight goals and provide three assists in France's first six matches.
Mbappe entered the semi-final against Spain as one of the biggest attacking threats of the tournament, having played a key role in France's run to the last four. However, the French captain was unable to influence the match as Spain's defence successfully restricted his movement and prevented him from creating meaningful chances. The 2-0 defeat ended France's hopes of reaching a third consecutive World Cup final, but it did not eliminate Mbappe's individual pursuit of another major personal achievement.
Spain's defensive organisation frustrated France's star-studded attack throughout the semi-final. Despite arriving at the tournament with one of the most feared attacking units, France struggled to create opportunities and managed only three shots on target during the entire match. Their first attempt on target came only in the 81st minute, highlighting Spain's dominance in limiting their opponents' attacking threat.

Mbappe endured one of his quietest World Cup performances, failing to record a single shot on target for only the second time in his career at the tournament. The first instance came during France's 2022 quarter-final against England, although Les Bleus managed to win that match 2-1. Against Spain, however, France could not find a way back into the contest as their attacking players failed to break through a disciplined Spanish defence.
The 27-year-old forward currently sits among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot with eight goals, level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi. While France's elimination means Mbappe cannot add to his tally in the final, he will have one more opportunity to score in the third-place playoff. The match, scheduled to take place in Miami on Saturday, will be played against the loser of the second semi-final between England and Argentina.
Mbappe has previously won the World Cup Golden Boot, claiming the award during the 2022 tournament after scoring eight goals, including a memorable hat-trick in the final against Argentina. His performances across three World Cups have established him as one of the most prolific players in international football history, and another Golden Boot would further strengthen his legacy.
With the final stages of the tournament approaching, the Golden Boot race remains open. Messi could move ahead if Argentina progress and he adds to his goal tally, while Mbappe will be determined to finish France's campaign on a positive note. Although the World Cup trophy is no longer within reach for Les Bleus, their captain still has an individual milestone to chase before the tournament concludes.
