Mattias Svanberg Sets Record With 16-Second Substitute Goal For Sweden
Mattias Svanberg scores 16-second World Cup substitute record goal.
Swedish midfielder Mattias Svanberg made history on Monday by scoring one of the fastest goals ever recorded by a substitute in FIFA World Cup history, finding the net just 16 seconds after coming on during Sweden’s dominant win over Tunisia.
Svanberg was introduced in the 83rd minute at 83:19 as Sweden prepared to take a free-kick deep in the Tunisian half. Within moments of stepping onto the pitch, he made an immediate impact, scoring with his first touch only seconds after entering the field, marking an extraordinary substitution that changed the closing stages of the match.
Initially, the goal was ruled out for offside by the assistant referee, but a lengthy VAR review overturned the decision. Replays showed that while Svanberg had been in an offside position from the initial free-kick taken by Yasin Ayari, a subtle touch from Alexander Isak’s attempted flick altered the phase of play, ultimately placing Svanberg back onside and validating the goal.

The strike was eventually confirmed, officially recorded at 16 to 18 seconds after his introduction, making it the second-fastest goal ever scored by a substitute in FIFA World Cup history. The record for the fastest substitute goal remains with Uruguay’s Richard Morales, who scored just 16 seconds after coming on against Senegal.
Sweden went on to secure a commanding 5–1 victory, with Yasin Ayari delivering a standout performance, scoring twice—including a powerful opener and a long-range strike to cap off the match. Star forwards Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres also contributed significantly, each registering goals and assists in a dominant attacking display.
Despite the team’s collective performance, it was Svanberg’s rapid intervention that became the defining moment of the match, etching his name into World Cup history for one of the quickest and most decisive substitute goals ever recorded.
