Marc-Andre ter Stegen Joins Girona on Loan from Barcelona Until June 2026
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen moves to Girona on loan to regain form and boost chances of starting for Germany at the 2026 World Cup.
For the first time in 12 years, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will play for a club other than Barcelona, joining Girona on loan for the remainder of the season. The move comes as the World Cup approaches, offering the German goalkeeper an opportunity to regain regular playing time after a challenging 15 months limited by injuries.
Ter Stegen has made just one appearance for Barcelona this season, featuring against third-division Guadalajara in last month’s Copa del Rey. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has favoured Joan Garcia as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, leaving Ter Stegen with limited opportunities to showcase his form. The loan to Girona could improve his chances of being Germany’s starting goalkeeper at the World Cup.
The transfer follows a season that began with tension between Ter Stegen and Barcelona over a medical report required to free up salary cap space. The 33-year-old has been with Barcelona since 2014, when he joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach, and has won six Spanish league titles and one UEFA Champions League during his tenure.

At Girona, Ter Stegen is expected to start ahead of Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, strengthening the team’s goalkeeping options. The club has experienced goalkeeping challenges this season, including backup Dominik Livakovic’s refusal to play last month in pursuit of World Cup playing time with Croatia.
Meanwhile, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has relied on Oliver Baumann in all six of the national team’s recent matches, as the squad secured World Cup qualification. Baumann has enjoyed a strong campaign with Hoffenheim, leading the Bundesliga club to an unexpected third-place standing so far.
Ter Stegen’s loan move marks a significant chapter in his career, giving him both consistent playing time and a platform to compete for Germany’s starting spot at football’s biggest tournament later this year. Girona fans will be eager to see the experienced goalkeeper make an immediate impact.
