Manzambi's Unlikely Rise From Goalkeeper Dreams to World Cup Stardom

Switzerland’s rising football star Johan Manzambi is making his mark as a goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup 2026, although his childhood ambition was to stand at the opposite end of the pitch and prevent goals. Growing up on football pitches in Geneva, Manzambi originally wanted to become a goalkeeper and spent hours trying to imitate German great Manuel Neuer, whose aggressive “sweeper-keeper” style changed the way the position was played at the highest level.

As a young player, Manzambi regularly practised rushing away from his goal and clearing the ball with his feet, attempting to copy Neuer’s ability to operate almost like an additional outfield player. Those early exercises unexpectedly helped shape the footballer he would later become. Playing out from the back improved his composure in possession, while constantly observing the movement of players ahead of him helped him develop game awareness and confidence with the ball at his feet.

Manzambi’s journey began in Geneva, where he was born into a family shaped by displacement and conflict. His mother, who is Angolan, was a victim of political persecution, while his father fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo during a period of intense internal conflict around the turn of the century. Against that background, football became an important part of Manzambi’s childhood and eventually provided him with a path towards the international stage.

His father introduced him to a football when he was just four years old, hoping his son could fulfil the sporting dream that he himself had been unable to achieve. Manzambi grew up surrounded by the game and gradually developed the technical qualities that would later allow him to move away from goalkeeping and establish a different identity on the pitch. The skills he developed while attempting to become a goalkeeper ultimately became useful as he evolved into an outfield player.

Football also ran through the family before Manzambi emerged as one of Switzerland’s promising young talents. His elder brother, Neftali Manzambi, developed as a forward and progressed through the youth academy of FC Basel before playing for clubs including Sporting Gijón, Winterthur and Lyon La Duchère. His brother’s journey provided another example of a possible career in professional football and helped create an environment in which the younger Manzambi could pursue his own ambitions.

Now representing Switzerland on football’s biggest stage, Manzambi’s career has taken a striking turn from the childhood dream of stopping shots to the reality of scoring goals at the World Cup. The goalkeeper drills he once performed on the pitches of Geneva helped build qualities that continue to influence his game today. His transformation from a boy inspired by Neuer into a goalscorer for Switzerland has become one of the notable personal stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
