Lionel Scaloni Backs Argentina Despite Performance Questions Ahead Of Semifinal

Coach remains confident despite scrutiny over Argentina's recent displays.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has dismissed criticism of his team's performances at the FIFA World Cup 2026, insisting the defending champions have fully earned their place in the semi-finals through consistent results. Speaking ahead of Argentina's highly anticipated clash against England in Atlanta, Scaloni said his side remains focused on securing another place in the World Cup final despite questions surrounding the quality of their performances. The winner of Wednesday's semi-final will face Spain in the title clash at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

Scaloni defended his players by highlighting Argentina's flawless record of six victories from six matches in the tournament. The reigning world champions topped Group J with wins over Algeria, Austria and Jordan before overcoming Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland in the knockout stages. Although Argentina required extra time to defeat both Cape Verde and Switzerland and staged a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to beat Egypt, the coach maintained that the team's resilience and determination have been key to their progress. He credited the squad for continuing the success that has defined Argentina's recent international campaigns.

The Argentina manager also stressed that results matter more than style of play at this advanced stage of the competition. Scaloni said reaching the World Cup semi-finals is the primary objective and insisted he has no complaints about the team's current form or physical condition. He expressed gratitude to his players for helping Argentina win multiple major trophies in recent years, including the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and consecutive Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. According to Scaloni, the team is highly motivated and fully prepared for the challenge against England.

Looking ahead to the semi-final, Scaloni downplayed the historical and political significance often associated with matches between Argentina and England. He said the contest should be viewed purely as a football match and not be linked to the 1982 Falklands War or other historical events. While acknowledging the tragic nature of the conflict and paying respect to those affected, the Argentina coach emphasised that sport should remain separate from politics and conflict, adding that the focus should remain solely on the game and the competition.

The semi-final also represents another milestone for Argentina, who have now reached the last four of the World Cup for the fourth consecutive edition after similar achievements in 2014, 2018, 2022 and now 2026. England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, secured their place in the semi-finals after defeating Norway 2-1 after extra time and are aiming to reach their first World Cup final since winning the tournament in 1966. Argentina, meanwhile, will look to extend their impressive 12-match World Cup winning streak and move one step closer to successfully defending the title they claimed in Qatar four years ago.
