Lionel Messi Inspires Inter Miami Win With Two Goals And An Assist

Messi leads 3-2 victory over DC United, closing in on MLS contract extension.

Lionel Messi delivered a masterclass on September 20, 2025, orchestrating all three goals in Inter Miami’s 3-2 victory over DC United in a thrilling Major League Soccer (MLS) clash at Chase Stadium. The 38-year-old Argentine, reportedly nearing a multi-year contract extension with the club, provided an assist in the first half and scored twice after the break, securing the win and bolstering his case for the 2025 Golden Boot with 22 goals, one ahead of Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge. Inter Miami, now fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 15-6-7 record, sits one point behind fourth-placed New York City FC, their next opponents on Wednesday.

Messi’s influence was immediate, assisting first-year midfielder Tadeo Allende’s eighth goal in the 35th minute to give Inter Miami a 1-0 halftime lead. DC United equalized in the 53rd minute through Christian Benteke’s ninth goal of the season, assisted by Brandon Servania. Messi responded decisively, netting the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute, assisted by Sergio Busquets, and adding an insurance strike in the 85th, with Jordi Alba recording his 10th assist. DC United’s Jacob Murrell pulled one back in stoppage time, assisted by Benteke and Rida Zouhir, but it wasn’t enough to deny Inter Miami the points.

The match showcased Inter Miami’s star-studded roster, with former Barcelona teammates Alba and Busquets complementing Messi’s brilliance. Goalkeeper Oscar Ustari made four saves in his 22nd start, while DC United’s Luis Barraza matched that tally in a losing effort. DC United, languishing at 5-16-10, struggled to contain Miami’s attacking prowess despite Benteke’s contribution, his 47th career MLS goal.

Off the field, Messi’s future with Inter Miami appears secure, with reports indicating a contract extension through at least 2026, aligning with the anticipated opening of Miami Freedom Park stadium next year. Co-owner Jorge Mas has emphasized retaining Messi, whose 12 assists and 22 goals this season underscore his value. As Inter Miami eyes a playoff push, Messi’s form and the team’s veteran core signal strong ambitions for silverware.
