Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Prepare For Sixth and Final World Cup Tournament

Messi and Ronaldo prepare for their sixth World Cup; both are seeking the ultimate trophy.

Football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are preparing for what is expected to be their final appearance on the sport’s biggest stage as both stars gear up for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America. The tournament is set to mark a historic milestone, with Messi and Ronaldo becoming the first footballers ever to feature in six separate FIFA World Cups. Nearly two decades after their World Cup debuts, the two icons are once again at the center of global attention as fans prepare for one final chapter in one of football’s greatest rivalries.

For Messi, the journey to another World Cup comes despite earlier suggestions that his international career might end after Argentina’s triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Argentine captain had described that victory as the perfect conclusion to his football story after leading his country to a dramatic penalty shootout win over France in the final. However, the 39-year-old has continued to perform at a high level since then, moving to Major League Soccer side Inter Miami CF and helping the club secure major domestic success while remaining a crucial figure for Argentina.

Messi also guided Argentina to victory at the 2024 Copa America in the United States and emerged as the top scorer during South American World Cup qualifying. The former FC Barcelona forward is now just two appearances away from reaching 200 international caps and already holds the record for most World Cup appearances with 26 matches. He currently has 13 World Cup goals, putting German striker Miroslav Klose’s all-time record of 16 within reach heading into the 2026 tournament.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, is also preparing for what he has confirmed will be the final World Cup of his career. The Portuguese superstar, now 41, remains the most-capped men’s international footballer in history with 226 appearances for Portugal. Despite questions over his advancing age, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has continued to back Ronaldo as the team’s first-choice striker. Ronaldo remains a key figure for both the national side and Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr FC, where he continues to score regularly.

Although Ronaldo enjoyed international success by captaining Portugal to victory at Euro 2016, the World Cup has remained the one major title missing from his collection. Portugal’s best run during Ronaldo’s era came in 2006 when the side reached the semi-finals. Since then, the team has struggled to make deep runs in the competition despite possessing several talented squads. Ronaldo has scored eight goals in World Cup tournaments so far but is still searching for his first goal in the knockout stages of the competition.

The possibility of a final showdown between Messi and Ronaldo has added even more excitement to the upcoming World Cup. If both Argentina and Portugal top their respective groups, the two football icons could potentially face each other in the quarter-finals in Kansas City on July 11. Such a meeting would represent one of the most anticipated matches in football history and could serve as the symbolic conclusion to an era defined by the rivalry, brilliance, and global influence of two of the greatest players the sport has ever seen.
