Kepa's Wembley Blunder: How One Mistake Ended Arsenal's Trophy Dream
Kepa's costly Wembley error hands Manchester City the League Cup trophy.
Mikel Arteta has defended his decision to start Kepa Arrizabalaga in Arsenal’s League Cup final defeat after a costly error contributed to a 2-0 loss against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The Arsenal manager stood by his selection despite criticism, insisting it was the fair choice given Kepa’s role throughout the competition.
The decisive moment came in the second half when Kepa mishandled a cross from Rayan Cherki, allowing the ball to slip through his hands and present an easy opportunity for Nico O'Reilly to head home the opening goal. The mistake shifted momentum firmly in City’s favour, leaving Arsenal struggling to regain control in a high-stakes final.
Just four minutes after the opener, O’Reilly struck again to double Manchester City’s advantage, effectively sealing the outcome. Arsenal, who had entered the match as favourites due to their strong domestic form, failed to mount a meaningful response, and the defeat extended their wait for a major trophy, which dates back to their FA Cup triumph in 2020.

Arteta explained that Kepa’s inclusion was based on merit and consistency, as the goalkeeper had featured throughout the League Cup campaign. The Arsenal manager emphasised that dropping him for the final would have been unfair both to the player and the squad, reiterating that mistakes are an unavoidable aspect of football, even at the highest level.
The Spaniard’s decision inevitably drew comparisons to Kepa’s past struggles in finals, including his controversial refusal to be substituted during a penalty shootout while playing for Chelsea in 2019 and subsequent shootout disappointments. These incidents have contributed to ongoing scrutiny of the goalkeeper’s performances in high-pressure matches.
Reflecting on the loss, Arteta expressed disappointment at Arsenal’s inability to capitalise on their early dominance, noting that his side created better chances in the first half but failed to convert them. He acknowledged Manchester City’s superior execution in key moments, admitting the defeat was a painful setback as Arsenal’s pursuit of silverware this season came to an abrupt end.
