Jannik Sinner Supports French Open Boycott Threat Over Prize Money Concerns

Sinner supports boycott threat over French Open prize dispute.

Tennis world number one Jannik Sinner has voiced strong support for a potential boycott of the French Open amid an ongoing dispute over prize money distribution between players and Grand Slam organisers. The comments come as top-ranked men’s and women’s players intensify pressure for a larger share of tournament revenues.

The controversy stems from Roland Garros organisers announcing a 9.5% increase in total prize money, taking the pool to 61.7 million euros. However, players argue that despite the increase, their share of overall tournament revenue is projected to drop from 15.5% in 2025 to 14.9% in 2026, far below their demand of 22%.

Sinner, speaking in Rome, said the issue was fundamentally about respect rather than just financial figures. He stressed that players across all rankings feel undervalued despite their contribution to the sport’s global appeal and revenue generation. His remarks reflected growing frustration within the locker room over the stalled negotiations.

He also pointed out that discussions with organisers have been ongoing for over a year without meaningful resolution. According to Sinner, top players had already written to Grand Slam authorities previously, but little progress has been made, leaving the situation “not close to conclusion” despite prolonged dialogue.

The Italian star acknowledged the increasing talk of a boycott, stating that such a step may eventually become necessary if players’ concerns continue to be ignored. His comments align with recent statements from other leading players, including Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, who have also criticised the current revenue model.

Sabalenka recently suggested that a boycott could become inevitable, arguing that it may be the only effective way for players to secure fair treatment. As tensions escalate ahead of the French Open, the dispute highlights widening divisions between players and tournament organisers over prize money distribution and governance in professional tennis.
