IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer Penalised, Punjab Kings Team Reprimanded

Iyer’s repeated breach sees PBKS team reprimanded in IPL 2026.

Shreyas Iyer has been penalised for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct for the second time this season, with the entire Punjab Kings squad also reprimanded following their match against Chennai Super Kings.

The action was taken after Punjab Kings were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during the match, marking their second such offence in IPL 2026. As per league regulations, repeat violations attract stricter penalties, reflecting the tournament’s emphasis on maintaining match timelines and discipline.

According to official IPL guidelines, Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh for the breach, as it was his team’s second offence under the Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate requirements. The rest of the playing XI, including the impact player, were also penalised, each receiving fines of either ₹6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever is lower.

This comes just days after Iyer was fined for a similar offence in Punjab Kings’ opening match of the season, indicating a pattern that has now drawn stricter scrutiny from the league authorities. Under current IPL rules, captains face escalating financial penalties for repeated slow over-rate violations, though suspensions are no longer imposed for such offences.

Despite the disciplinary action, Punjab Kings had a successful outing on the field, defeating Chennai Super Kings in a high-scoring encounter. However, the repeated breaches have raised concerns around game management and on-field execution, particularly in ensuring overs are completed within the stipulated time.

The incident also highlights how modern IPL regulations prioritise maintaining the pace of play, with penalties designed to deter delays that can impact broadcast schedules and viewer experience. Teams are expected to adhere strictly to over-rate norms, especially in a tightly packed tournament schedule.

With this being his second offence, Iyer now moves closer to even steeper penalties if violations continue. The development adds a layer of pressure on the Punjab Kings captain to address time management issues quickly, even as the team looks to build momentum in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
