IPL 2026: Ricky Ponting Calls Dropped Catches a "Virus" as Punjab Kings Lose Third Game

Sunrisers beat Punjab by 33 runs as PBKS drop three catches; Ponting blames the fielding virus for the third straight loss.

Punjab Kings Head Coach Ricky Ponting described his team’s repeated fielding lapses as a “virus” after Punjab suffered a third consecutive defeat in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Punjab Kings were beaten by 33 runs by Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday after dropping three crucial catches and missing a routine stumping opportunity during Hyderabad’s imposing first innings total of 235 for 4. The defeat also extended Punjab’s poor record in Hyderabad, where they have now lost nine straight IPL matches.

Sunrisers Hyderabad rode on explosive batting performances from Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan, who made full use of the reprieves handed to them by Punjab’s fielders. Klaasen smashed 69 runs off 43 balls, while Kishan added a rapid 55 from 32 deliveries to guide Hyderabad to a commanding score on a batting-friendly pitch. Earlier, openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head provided a fiery start, attacking Punjab pacers Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen during the powerplay overs.

Punjab’s fielding errors proved costly throughout the innings as wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh missed a straightforward stumping chance, while Shashank Singh and Lockie Ferguson dropped catches off the bowling of veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Despite the difficult conditions for bowlers, Chahal delivered an economical spell of 1 for 32, but the missed opportunities left the leg-spinner visibly frustrated. Punjab’s bowling unit struggled overall, with Jansen and Arshdeep conceding a combined 104 runs in their eight overs.

After the match, Ponting admitted that Punjab’s poor catching had become a persistent concern this season. The former Australian captain said the team had been working extensively on fielding drills during training sessions, especially after Shashank Singh returned from a hamstring injury. Ponting defended the player’s effort but made it clear that such chances must be taken in high-pressure IPL contests. He also dismissed suggestions that floodlights or unfamiliar conditions contributed to the dropped catches, saying the team had trained under lights at the venue the previous evening.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowlers then backed up the batting display with a disciplined performance to restrict Punjab Kings to 202 for 7. Pat Cummins and Eshan Malinga played crucial roles by taking important wickets and bowling a combined 21 dot balls. Punjab’s chase never truly gained momentum despite a fighting unbeaten century from Cooper Connolly, who scored 107 runs from 59 balls. His innings remained the lone bright spot in an otherwise disappointing batting effort from the visitors.

The victory lifted Sunrisers Hyderabad to the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 14 points, strengthening their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. Another win from their remaining three league matches could be enough to secure a place in the knockout stage. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, find themselves struggling for consistency after three successive defeats, with concerns growing over both their bowling execution and fielding standards. The team’s repeated inability to hold catches has increasingly become a defining issue in a tightly contested IPL campaign where small mistakes often decide results.
