IPL 2026 Playoff Scenario Explained As Eight Teams Remain In Contention

Eight teams still in contention for IPL 2026 playoffs.

The IPL 2026 playoff race has intensified dramatically, with eight of the ten teams still mathematically in contention for a top-four finish as the league stage approaches its decisive phase. While Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants have already fallen out of the qualification picture, the remaining sides are still battling for the four available playoff spots.

At the top of the table, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans, both on 16 points, are in the strongest positions. RCB, the defending champions, hold a significant advantage due to their superior net run rate and can secure a top-two finish by winning their remaining fixtures. Gujarat Titans, on a strong winning streak, are in a similar position, with two wins likely enough to guarantee a place in the top two.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, currently on 14 points, remain firmly in the playoff race but will need to win both of their remaining matches to secure qualification without relying on other results. A top-two finish is still possible, but would require at least one slip-up from either RCB or Gujarat Titans.Punjab Kings, on 13 points, are in a more precarious position after a recent losing streak. Their maximum possible tally of 17 points means they can still be overtaken by multiple teams, leaving them dependent on both wins and favourable outcomes elsewhere to stay in contention.

Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, both on 12 points, face must-win situations in all remaining matches. Even then, their qualification chances depend heavily on results involving teams above them, making net run rate and external outcomes crucial to their hopes.Delhi Capitals, on 10 points, face an even steeper challenge. With a maximum possible tally of 14 points and a significantly weaker net run rate, they must win all remaining matches and rely on multiple teams above them collapsing simultaneously to stay alive in the race.

Kolkata Knight Riders, on 9 points, are in the most difficult position among the remaining contenders. They must win all their remaining matches and depend heavily on other results going in their favour to have any chance of breaking into the top four. With multiple permutations still in play, the final phase of the league promises a tightly contested finish as teams fight not just for qualification, but also for advantageous playoff positioning.
