India's Women's Pairs Beat Malta in CWG 2026 Bowls Opener
India's women's pairs beat Malta in tense Commonwealth Games bowls opener.
India's women's pairs team of Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey opened their Commonwealth Games 2026 Bowls campaign with a thrilling victory over Malta in the sectional Group Play stage on Thursday. Competing in the sport's newly introduced indoor format, officially known as Bowls, the Indian duo held their nerve in a dramatic tiebreak to defeat sisters Rebecca Louise Rixon and Connie-Leigh Rixon, securing a winning start to their tournament.
India began the contest confidently, taking control from the opening end through a series of accurate deliveries. Rupa Rani Tirkey settled into the match early, allowing Pinki Singh to capitalise with precise bowls that gave India a 2-0 lead. Although the Maltese pair responded by reducing the deficit, Pinki produced another crucial delivery in the third end, with a measurement confirming her bowl was closest to the jack. India continued to build momentum and stretched their advantage to 5-1 before closing out the opening set with a convincing 7-1 victory.
The second set proved far more competitive as Malta mounted a strong comeback. Pinki initially helped India take a 2-0 lead by nudging the jack in their favour, but Connie-Leigh Rixon responded with an excellent final bowl to level the scores. Both teams exchanged crucial ends in a tense battle, with Pinki once again winning a key measurement to restore India's advantage. However, Rebecca Louise Rixon and her sister maintained their composure in the closing stages to level the second set and force the match into a decisive tiebreak.

The sudden-death tiebreak saw Malta gain the early advantage by placing two bowls closer to the jack than India's best effort. Rupa improved India's position with an important delivery, leaving Pinki Singh with the responsibility of deciding the outcome. Her first bowl narrowed the margin, while the second finished agonisingly short of changing the result, leaving everything dependent on her final attempt.
With the pressure at its highest, Pinki delivered an outstanding final bowl that finished closest to the jack, turning the tiebreak in India's favour and sealing a memorable victory. Her composed performance in the decisive moments highlighted India's resilience, while Rupa's consistent contributions throughout the contest played an equally important role in the comeback.
The victory gives India valuable momentum at the start of the women's pairs competition and strengthens the team's prospects in the group stage. The hard-fought win also showcased the determination of the Pinki-Rupa partnership, which repeatedly responded under pressure to overcome a spirited challenge from Malta and begin the Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign on a positive note.
