India's Thomas Cup Campaign in Jeopardy after Losing Both Singles and Doubles to China
India trails China 0-2 in Thomas Cup Finals Group A after losing two competitive three-game matches in Denmark.
India endured a difficult start to their final Group A tie at the Thomas Cup Finals as Lakshya Sen and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered narrow three-game defeats against China, leaving the team trailing 0-2 in the contest. Both matches were closely fought, but India failed to convert key moments despite strong resistance across all games.
In the opening singles, Lakshya Sen showed flashes of brilliance but ultimately went down in a tense encounter against China’s top order. The 2021 World Championships bronze medallist started competitively but lost the first game 19-21. He bounced back strongly in the second game, dominating with an aggressive approach to win 21-8 and level the match. However, in the deciding game, Lakshya struggled to maintain consistency as his opponent regained control, eventually sealing the match 21-12 to give China the early advantage.
The pressure then shifted to India’s star men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who have been one of the most reliable combinations on the international circuit. The duo pushed their Chinese opponents hard in a tightly contested match, engaging in fast-paced rallies and intense net exchanges. Despite their fight and experience in big-match situations, they were unable to close out crucial points in the final stages, eventually losing another three-game thriller that further deepened India’s challenge in the tie.

Lakshya’s recent form had raised expectations going into the match, especially after his impressive run to the All England Championships final last month, where he had defeated world No. 7 Li Shi Feng along the way. However, he was unable to replicate that performance in this high-pressure decider, as China’s consistency and composure under pressure proved decisive in key moments of both matches.
With India now trailing 0-2, the team faces a steep uphill task to recover in the tie against a strong Chinese side. The remaining matches will require near-perfect performances across singles and doubles if India are to stage a comeback, as the margin for error has now been reduced to zero in this crucial Thomas Cup encounter.
