Indian Wells: Daniil Medvedev Defeats Carlos Alcaraz, Ends 16-Match Winning Run

Medvedev snaps Alcaraz’s 16-match streak to reach Indian Wells final.

Carlos Alcaraz’s impressive 16-match winning streak came to an end on Saturday after he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final of the prestigious Indian Wells Open. Medvedev produced a composed and tactically disciplined performance to beat the Spanish star in straight sets, securing his place in the final of the tournament.

The Russian fourth seed controlled the match from the baseline and used his powerful serve and defensive consistency to frustrate Alcaraz. Medvedev claimed the opening set 6-3 before edging a tightly contested second set 7-6 in a tiebreak. The victory not only halted Alcaraz’s winning run but also marked a significant result for Medvedev as he returned to the Indian Wells final after falling short in previous campaigns.

Alcaraz entered the semi-final in strong form, having won 16 consecutive matches across tournaments and looking to defend his Indian Wells title. The 20-year-old Spaniard had dominated much of the event with his trademark aggressive baseline play and athletic shot-making. However, Medvedev’s deep returns and patient rallies disrupted Alcaraz’s rhythm, forcing the world No. 2 into several uncharacteristic errors during crucial moments of the match.

Medvedev’s strategy focused on neutralising Alcaraz’s attacking game by extending rallies and targeting the Spaniard’s movement across the court. The Russian’s ability to absorb pressure and convert key break opportunities proved decisive, particularly in the first set where he capitalised on a mid-set break. In the second set, both players held serve under intense pressure before Medvedev dominated the tiebreak to seal the victory.

Despite the defeat, Alcaraz’s campaign in Indian Wells highlighted his consistency on the ATP Tour. The young Spaniard has already established himself as one of the sport’s leading figures, and his recent winning streak demonstrated the form that has kept him near the top of the world rankings. His run at the tournament included several commanding performances that reinforced his status as a favourite in major events.

For Medvedev, the win represents an important step in his bid to claim another Masters 1000 title. The former world No. 1 has been steadily regaining form this season, and his victory over Alcaraz signals a strong return to top-level contention. With momentum on his side, the Russian will now look to carry that confidence into the final as he aims to lift the Indian Wells trophy and add another significant title to his career.
