Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin Qualifies For Esports World Cup Chess Tournament

Nihal Sarin qualified for the Esports World Cup chess competition.

Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin has qualified for the chess event at the upcoming Esports World Cup 2026 through the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) leaderboard, marking another major achievement for Indian esports and chess representation on the global stage. Sarin, representing gaming and esports organisation S8UL, becomes only the second Indian player to secure qualification for the tournament so far.

Sarin joins fellow Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram in the competition, which is scheduled to take place in Paris from August 11 to 15. This year’s chess event at the Esports World Cup will feature a prize pool of USD 1.5 million, approximately Rs 14.3 crore. The broader Esports World Cup is set to run from July 6 to August 23 and is expected to feature more than 2,000 players representing 200 clubs across over 100 countries, competing for a combined prize pool of USD 75 million.

The qualification process for the chess event was based on performances across the Champions Chess Tour season, which included the Speed Chess Championship 2025 and Chess.com Open 2026. Sarin narrowly missed direct qualification through the Chess.com Open after finishing fourth, one place outside the automatic qualification spots. However, he earned 100 crucial leaderboard points from the event and added to his tally through consistent performances in the Titled Tuesday Grand Prix circuit across the Autumn, Winter and Spring splits.

A runner-up finish in the Spring Split proved decisive, helping Sarin finish the season with 139 points and secure qualification through the leaderboard standings. Under the qualification format, the top three players from the Speed Chess Championship and Chess.com Open earned direct berths, while additional positions were decided through accumulated leaderboard points from multiple events during the season.

Sarin had also represented India at the 2025 Esports World Cup after qualifying through the Last Chance Qualifier. He reached the quarterfinals before losing to eventual champion Magnus Carlsen. Reflecting on his latest qualification, Sarin said the season demanded consistency across different formats and tournaments over several months, adding that his previous experience at the event motivated him to return stronger this year.

Meanwhile, fellow S8UL Grandmaster Pranesh M remains in contention for qualification through the upcoming Last Chance Qualifier after narrowly missing out through the leaderboard standings. The tournament will feature a revised two-phase structure this year, beginning with a Play-In stage before progressing to the Group Stage and eventual Playoffs. Aravindh Chithambaram, who qualified earlier through DreamHack Atlanta, will compete in the Play-In stage, while Nihal Sarin has directly secured a place in the Group Stage through his CCT ranking.
