India Dominates ICC ODI Rankings Despite Narrowing Lead Over Rivals
India retains the top ODI ranking with 118 points, New Zealand second.
The Indian men’s cricket team retained the number one position in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings following the annual update released on Monday. Despite losing one rating point in the revised calculations, India continued to lead the standings with 118 points, maintaining a narrow five-point advantage over second-placed New Zealand. The rankings update comes as international teams intensify preparations for the next ODI cycle and the road to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
According to the updated rankings, the New Zealand men’s cricket team climbed close to the top with 113 rating points, while Australia remained in third place with 109 points. The International Cricket Council’s annual update gives full weightage to matches played since May 2025, while results from the previous two years are now weighted at 50 per cent. The revised methodology slightly altered team ratings but did not affect India’s overall hold on the top position in the ODI format.
India’s consistent performances in bilateral ODI series and ICC tournaments over recent years have helped the team maintain its dominance in the rankings. The side has remained one of the strongest teams in world cricket across formats, with depth in both batting and bowling departments contributing to its sustained success. While the one-point drop reflects the impact of the annual recalculation, India continues to enjoy a comfortable lead over most competing nations in the rankings table.

One of the notable changes in the updated standings was South Africa’s rise into fourth position with 102 rating points, overtaking Pakistan, who slipped to fifth place with 98 points. Pakistan’s decline highlights the growing competition among the top ODI nations as ranking points continue to fluctuate based on recent international performances. Cricket analysts believe the rankings battle could become even tighter over the next year as teams compete in major bilateral series and ICC events.
Further down the rankings, Sri Lanka retained sixth place with 96 points, followed by Afghanistan in seventh with 93 points and England in eighth with 89 points. Bangladesh remained ninth with 84 points, while the West Indies stayed in 10th position with 74 points. The rankings also reflected changes among emerging cricket nations, with Ireland moving ahead of Zimbabwe into 11th place and the United States climbing above Scotland into 13th position.
The ICC ODI rankings hold major significance because they directly influence qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. Under the qualification system, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings as of March 31, 2027, will secure automatic qualification alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. If South Africa remain within the top eight, the ninth-ranked side may also qualify directly, increasing the importance of every ODI fixture played during the qualification period.
