Historic Victory: Iraq Ends 40-Year World Cup Wait, Inspires 46 Million Fans
Iraq beats Bolivia 2-1, ending 40-year World Cup absence, inspiring millions.
Iraq has secured a remarkable return to the FIFA World Cup after a 40-year absence, clinching the final qualification spot with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Bolivia in an intercontinental playoff on Tuesday. The win marks Iraq’s first World Cup appearance since the 1986 tournament in Mexico, setting up a Group I clash against France, Senegal, and Norway. Goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and captain Aymen Hussein secured the historic victory for the Iraqi side.
Australian coach Graham Arnold, who led the squad, praised his players for overcoming extraordinary challenges, including the disruption caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. “Delighted for the players, very good boys, very happy for the 46 million Iraqis,” Arnold said. He added that the achievement could help reshape global perceptions of Iraq and Iraqi football, urging his team to “shock the world” at the tournament.
Iraq’s journey to Mexico was fraught with logistical challenges. Most of the squad endured a three-day overland trip from Baghdad through Jordan, as regional conflict delayed their arrival. Despite exhaustion, Iraq started strongly, taking the lead in just the ninth minute. A precise corner from midfielder Amir Al-Ammari found Al-Hamadi, who headed home to make it 1-0.

Bolivia responded, equalizing in the 38th minute through Moises Paniagua, who finished a move initiated by Ramiro Vaca. The goal unsettled Iraq temporarily, allowing Bolivia to dominate the remainder of the first half. However, Iraq regained control after halftime, and in the 53rd minute, a long ball set up substitute Marko Lawk-Farji, whose cross found Hussein to score the decisive second goal.
Despite Bolivia’s frantic attempts to force extra time, Iraq’s defense remained resolute, preserving the 2-1 lead through nine minutes of stoppage time. The result sparked elation among Iraqi players and fans alike, marking a symbolic moment of triumph amid challenging circumstances.
Bolivia coach Oscar Villegas expressed his devastation at the defeat. Meanwhile, Arnold emphasized the work ahead, noting the team has two months to prepare and fitness to build. “For us to do something at this World Cup would be a miracle,” he said, highlighting the historic nature of Iraq’s return to the global stage.
