Hardik Pandya's Captaincy Decision Baffles Experts; Sehwag Cracks Joke at Kartik's Bewilderment

Hardik Pandya's decision to bench Shardul Thakur baffles experts; Sehwag jokes at Kartik's confusion.

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has once again come under the scanner after his team failed to defend a massive total of 243 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in an IPL 2026 encounter that left fans and experts questioning several tactical decisions. Despite posting a strong batting performance, MI’s bowling strategy collapsed under pressure as SRH chased down 244 in just 18.4 overs, exposing gaps in execution and leadership on the field.

The biggest talking point from the match was Mumbai Indians’ puzzling decision to include Shardul Thakur as an Impact Player but not utilise him even for a single over. This move left former India cricketer Murali Kartik visibly stunned during a post-match discussion, where he admitted he could not understand the reasoning behind the call. “Perhaps they forgot about it or something else. I actually did not understand.” Kartik remarked, reflecting widespread confusion around the decision.

Adding a lighter moment to the debate, former India opener Virender Sehwag injected humour into the discussion with his trademark wit. Sitting alongside Kartik during a broadcast analysis, Sehwag joked about the situation, saying, “Give me the Red Bull can. I’ll search when I spray it on him.” His comment quickly went viral on social media, with fans appreciating his ability to lighten a tense tactical debate.

However, even Sehwag acknowledged that humour aside, the decision raised serious cricketing questions. He pointed out that if a wicket-taking bowler like Shardul Thakur was included as an Impact Player, he should have been given at least a chance to bowl. “If you’ve brought him on as an Impact Player, you should have definitely given him one over. He is a wicket-taking bowler. I’m surprised,” Sehwag said, urging clarity from the MI leadership.

On the field, SRH dominated the chase with aggressive batting from Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, and Salil Arora, dismantling MI’s bowling attack with ease. Jasprit Bumrah also endured an unusually quiet outing, further compounding Mumbai’s struggles in defending the total.

The result has pushed Mumbai Indians down to ninth place in the IPL 2026 points table, with just two wins from eight matches. As scrutiny grows over Hardik Pandya’s tactical decisions, the franchise faces increasing pressure to regroup quickly and stabilise their campaign before the season slips further away.
