Gukesh Steps Back: World Chess Champion to Play Fewer Events, Prioritise Title Defence

Gukesh cuts tournament schedule to focus on world title defence preparation.

Reigning world chess champion D Gukesh has decided to reduce his tournament commitments in 2026 following a series of underwhelming performances, opting instead to focus on training and preparation for his upcoming title defence. The 18-year-old grandmaster announced the decision on Tuesday, indicating a strategic shift in approach after a challenging run of results across major competitions.

Gukesh acknowledged his recent struggles, which included an early exit as the top seed at the Chess World Cup held in India in November 2025. This was followed by disappointing finishes at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in December, along with a 10th-place result at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament and a ninth-place finish at the Prague Chess Festival. These outcomes marked a noticeable dip in form for the reigning champion.

In a statement shared on social media, Gukesh expressed disappointment over his performances and said he would step back from a packed tournament schedule to regain his best form. He emphasised that the decision was made in consultation with his team, prioritising focused training over frequent competition. The move reflects a calculated effort to rebuild consistency ahead of high-stakes events.

The Indian prodigy confirmed that he will participate in only two events from the prestigious Grand Chess Tour this year. These include the Rapid and Blitz tournaments scheduled in Warsaw and Zagreb, while he will skip the remaining events in the series. Organisers of the tour have reportedly supported his decision, recognising the importance of his preparation phase.

Meanwhile, Gukesh’s challenger for the upcoming FIDE World Chess Championship is yet to be determined. The ongoing Candidates Tournament in Cyprus will decide his opponent, with eight top players competing for the opportunity to face the world champion later this year in a highly anticipated clash.

In his absence from the full tour, reigning World Cup champion Javokhir Sindarov has been named as a replacement participant in the Grand Chess Tour. Despite scaling back, Gukesh is set to compete next at the Masters Chess Menorca event in Spain from April 7 to 12, marking the beginning of a more selective yet focused competitive calendar.
