Gambhir Criticises India’s Approach Despite Huge Victory Over West Indies In Second ODI
Gambhir Unhappy Despite India’s Win
India head coach Gautam Gambhir expressed his frustration with the conditions at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium even after India secured a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second ODI. The match produced nearly 800 runs, with the West Indies posting 405 before India chased down the target of 406 with 6.3 overs remaining. Shubman Gill produced a spectacular double century to anchor India’s chase and ensure the hosts completed the run chase with considerable time to spare. However, Gambhir’s reaction after the match focused less on India’s dominant performance and more on the nature of the contest. Speaking to the broadcaster, the head coach criticised the batting-friendly surface and said the conditions did not provide the balance between bat and ball that he believes is necessary for a meaningful one-day international.
Gambhir was particularly critical of the lack of assistance available to bowlers throughout the match. With both teams scoring heavily, the contest became dominated by batting, leaving little room for bowlers to influence proceedings. The West Indies reached 405 in their 50 overs before India responded with 406 for two in just 43.3 overs. While such a high-scoring game can provide entertainment for spectators, Gambhir argued that excessive assistance for batters can come at the expense of the contest between bat and ball. He indicated that domestic and international cricket authorities need to consider how pitches are prepared so that bowlers have a genuine opportunity to contribute. His comments came despite India producing a commanding chase and registering another victory in the series.
The central figure in India’s successful pursuit was Gill, who delivered one of the most significant innings of his ODI career. The India captain dominated the West Indies bowling attack as India raced towards the target. His double hundred provided the foundation for the chase and ensured that the enormous target never appeared beyond India’s reach. The performance also underlined Gill’s importance to India’s ODI batting plans, particularly as the team continues to develop its approach under the current leadership group. India’s ability to chase 406 with more than six overs still available demonstrated the extraordinary batting conditions on the day. Yet Gambhir’s assessment suggested that the sheer volume of runs was itself evidence of an imbalance rather than necessarily a sign of an ideal ODI surface.

The match followed a familiar pattern from the opening stages. West Indies’ batters were able to accumulate runs at a rapid rate, building a total of 405 that would ordinarily represent a formidable challenge in a 50-over international. India, however, responded with an even more aggressive approach during the chase. Gill’s innings kept the required run rate under control while allowing India to remain ahead of the asking rate. The visitors struggled to create sustained pressure with the ball, and India’s batters capitalised on the favourable conditions. By the time the winning runs were scored, India had lost only two wickets. The result gave India another victory over the West Indies, but the discussion around the match extended beyond the result because of the unusually high scoring.
Gambhir’s remarks therefore centred on the broader issue of pitch preparation and the role of bowlers in limited-overs cricket. The former India batter said he wanted to see conditions that offered a more competitive contest rather than surfaces overwhelmingly tilted towards batting. His comments effectively placed responsibility on the BCCI and state cricket associations to examine how pitches are prepared for future matches. The objective, according to Gambhir’s argument, should not be to suppress scoring but to ensure that bowlers have enough assistance through pace, bounce, movement or other characteristics to influence the game. Such conditions can make tactical decisions more significant and prevent matches from becoming contests driven almost entirely by the ability of batters to accumulate runs.
The eight-wicket victory nevertheless strengthened India’s position in the ODI series against the West Indies. The team’s successful chase of 406 was powered by Gill’s remarkable double century and another emphatic batting display. For Gambhir, however, the result did not completely overshadow his concerns about the playing conditions. His assessment was that an ODI should provide a contest in which both departments have meaningful opportunities to affect the outcome. The Guwahati match demonstrated how quickly modern ODI batting can turn even a 400-plus target into a successful chase when conditions heavily favour run-scoring. While India will take confidence from the manner of its victory, Gambhir’s comments have also placed renewed attention on the need for pitches that provide greater balance between bat and ball in future matches.
