Gambhir Challenges BCCI: Six-Day Gap Before Afghanistan Test Creates Crisis

Gambhir and Gill oppose a six-day gap between the IPL final and the Afghanistan Test; reserves may play.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir and Test captain Shubman Gill have reportedly expressed concerns over the tight scheduling of an upcoming Test match against Afghanistan, raising questions about player workload and preparation time. The issue stems from the minimal gap between the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2026 and the scheduled Test fixture.

According to reports, the IPL 2026 final is set to take place on May 31, while the one-off Test against Afghanistan is scheduled to begin on June 6. The narrow six-day window has sparked unease within the team management, as players involved in the IPL playoffs may have limited time to recover and transition to the longer format of the game.

The situation has reportedly prompted the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to consider naming a squad that could include reserve or fringe players for the Test match. This approach may help manage player fatigue while ensuring that the team remains competitive despite the scheduling constraints.

Concerns have also been raised about the impact of such scheduling on player performance and injury risk. Transitioning from high-intensity T20 cricket to the demands of Test cricket within a short period can be physically and mentally challenging, particularly for key players expected to feature in both formats.

Emerging players such as Gurnoor Brar and Devdutt Padikkal are reportedly being considered as potential options for the Test squad. Their inclusion could provide an opportunity to test bench strength while offering senior players additional recovery time.

While no official announcement has been made regarding the final squad, the scheduling debate highlights ongoing challenges in balancing domestic leagues with international commitments. The decision taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for handling similar situations in the future.
