France Coach Deschamps Unfazed by All-Argentine Referee Panel for Morocco Clash
Deschamps addresses referee controversy ahead of France's World Cup quarterfinal clash.
France head coach Didier Deschamps has played down concerns over FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine refereeing team for his side’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco. The officials for the highly anticipated match include Argentine referee Facundo Tello, along with assistants, a reserve assistant and a fourth official from the same country. Despite the debate surrounding the appointments, Deschamps insisted that France’s focus remains firmly on Morocco rather than the match officials.
Deschamps said he trusted the referees and saw no reason for his players to be distracted by the controversy surrounding their nationality. “We have to deal with it. I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referee,” the France coach said. He also appeared to take a jab at recent criticism of officiating at the tournament, expressing hope that the officials would perform as well as François Letexier, who refereed Argentina’s controversial victory over Egypt.
The quarter-final will be a repeat of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, when France defeated Morocco to reach the final. Morocco, led by Achraf Hakimi, have once again emerged as serious contenders after eliminating the Netherlands on penalties in the round of 32. France, meanwhile, have been one of the tournament’s most dangerous attacking teams, scoring 14 goals so far, more than any other side in the competition.

Kylian Mbappé has led France’s powerful attack, supported by Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise and Bradley Barcola. Morocco, however, will be hoping to repeat the resilience that made them the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022. The appointment of Argentine officials has added another layer of discussion because of the recent football rivalry between France and Argentina following their dramatic 2022 World Cup final.
France backup goalkeeper Robin Risser also dismissed concerns over the refereeing panel, acknowledging that there had been “a certain bitterness” between France and Argentina since the last World Cup final. However, he said such tensions were part of football and expressed confidence in the appointed officials. Risser added that if the referees had been selected for the match, it was because they were considered capable of officiating at the required level.
Refereeing decisions have been heavily debated during the tournament, particularly after Argentina’s comeback victory over Egypt in the round of 16. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan and Mostafa Zico criticised the officials after a goal was disallowed by the video assistant referee, with allegations of injustice following the match. Deschamps responded to the wider controversy with a pointed remark, saying he hoped the officials for France’s quarter-final would be as good as Letexier was during the Argentina-Egypt encounter.
