FIFA's Infantino Condemns Racist Remarks Against Kylian Mbappe

FIFA's Infantino condemns racist remarks against France captain Kylian Mbappe.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly condemned racist remarks directed at France captain Kylian Mbappe by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla, saying the football world stands in solidarity with the forward. Infantino reaffirmed FIFA’s commitment to fighting racism and said football must remain a safe and inclusive space for everyone, particularly after the sport demonstrated its ability to unite people during the ongoing World Cup.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Infantino said he unequivocally condemned the remarks made against Mbappe and stressed that racism must be confronted collectively. He said the entire football community and wider society stood with the France captain, adding that FIFA would continue its efforts to remove racism from the game and society. The FIFA chief described football as a powerful force for unity and inclusion.

French President Emmanuel Macron also backed Mbappe after the France captain responded to the remarks. Macron said the footballer had scored “another goal”, this time against racism, and offered him his full support. He added that when offensive words undermine shared values, the response should be based on dignity, respect and fraternity.

The controversy began after Amarilla reportedly described Mbappe using remarks related to his Cameroonian heritage and questioned his French identity. She also criticised his personality and appearance while commenting on France’s performance. Mbappe responded by describing the senator as a “despicable woman” who was unworthy of holding her position, escalating a controversy that quickly drew international attention.

The Paraguayan government also distanced itself from Amarilla’s comments and issued a statement rejecting the remarks. It said the statements were contrary to the values of peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity promoted by the country. The government stressed that the senator’s comments represented her individual responsibility as a member of the legislative branch and did not reflect the position of Paraguay or its people.

Infantino reiterated that football had shown throughout the World Cup how it could bring people together across national and cultural boundaries. He said FIFA would continue working to eradicate racism from the sport and society. The strong reactions from FIFA, Macron and the Paraguayan government have placed renewed focus on racism in football and the responsibility of public figures to uphold principles of dignity and respect.
