India’s skincare trend exposes rising cost of beauty ideals.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has reached the knockout stage with the introduction of a new Round of 32 format, marking a historic expansion in the tournament’s structure. For the first time, 48 national teams are competing across three host nations—United States, Canada, and Mexico—resulting in a record 104-match schedule. The revised format has significantly reshaped the pathway to the title, adding an extra knockout round before the traditional Round of 16.
Under the new structure, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualified for the knockout stage, accounting for 24 places. They were joined by the eight best third-placed teams across all groups, bringing the total to 32 teams. These third-placed sides were ranked based on points, goal difference, goals scored, fair play records, and, if required, FIFA rankings as the final tiebreaker.
Football’s governing body, FIFA, designed the expanded system to maintain competitiveness across all groups until the final matchday of the group stage. The format ensures that even third-placed teams remain in contention, making goal difference, discipline, and scoring efficiency crucial factors in determining qualification. The structure has added new tactical complexity to the tournament’s early stages.

The Round of 32 fixtures feature several high-profile clashes, beginning on June 29 with Canada taking on South Africa and Brazil facing Japan. Other major fixtures include Germany vs Paraguay, Netherlands vs Morocco, England vs DR Congo, and Belgium vs Senegal. Matches are scheduled across multiple time slots in Indian Standard Time, with evening and late-night kick-offs spread over several days.
On July 3, fans will see Spain take on Austria, while Portugal meet Croatia in another marquee encounter. Switzerland face Algeria, and Australia play Egypt later that night. One of the most anticipated fixtures comes on July 4, when Argentina face Cabo Verde, alongside Colombia’s clash with Ghana, completing the Round of 32 lineup.
With the knockout phase now underway, the tournament is expected to intensify as teams battle in single-elimination matches for a place in the Round of 16. The expanded format has already generated global debate, but it has also ensured wider participation and more high-stakes encounters in football’s most prestigious competition.
