FIFA World Cup 2026 Streaming Price Triggers Debate Among Indian Football Fans
Zee announces broadcast rights and viewing packages.
Indian football fans now have clarity on how they will be able to watch the FIFA World Cup 2026 after FIFA finalized a major broadcasting agreement with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. The deal grants Zee exclusive rights to televise and stream the tournament across India, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the event's broadcast partner. The agreement also covers several future FIFA competitions, strengthening Zee's position in the sports broadcasting market and expanding football's reach among Indian audiences.
The partnership extends beyond the men's World Cup, with Zee securing rights to a total of 39 FIFA events, including the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027 and the FIFA World Cup 2030. To support its growing sports portfolio, the company has announced the launch of four dedicated sports channels under its Unite8 Sports network. The move reflects the broadcaster's long-term commitment to football and comes at a time when the sport continues to gain popularity among younger viewers in India.
For fans planning to stream the tournament, Zee5 will serve as the primary digital platform. The company's All Access + Sports Pack has been priced at Rs 799 for a three-month subscription, giving viewers access to all 104 matches of the tournament. However, the package will include advertisements during viewing. Subscribers seeking enhanced features can opt for the Premium Annual Plan at Rs 1,699, which offers a year of access, 4K Ultra HD streaming, support for up to four devices, and ad-free viewing for non-sports content.

Television viewers will also have multiple options to follow the action live through Zee's newly launched sports channels. Subscription rates have been kept relatively affordable, with Unite8 Sports 1 priced at Rs 7 per month, Unite8 Sports 1 HD at Rs 9, Unite8 Sports 2 at Rs 8, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD at Rs 11 per month. The availability of both television and digital viewing options is expected to help the tournament reach a broader audience across urban and rural markets alike.
Despite the announcement, the pricing structure has sparked criticism from sections of the football community. Many fans expressed concerns on social media about the Rs 799 streaming package, arguing that the cost is high for a tournament lasting just over a month. Others questioned why advertisements would still be included despite the premium pricing. Comparisons were also drawn with competing streaming platforms, with some supporters suggesting that lower subscription rates could attract a larger subscriber base.
The FIFA World Cup 2026, scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19, will be the largest edition in the tournament's history. Featuring 48 teams and a record 104 matches, the competition will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The United States will stage 78 matches, while Canada and Mexico will host 13 games each. The tournament is also set to introduce several innovations, including the first-ever halftime show at a FIFA World Cup final, making it one of the most anticipated sporting events of the decade.
