FIFA World Cup 2026 Referee Omar Artan Denied US Entry, Somalia Responds

Somalia backs referee Omar Artan after US entry denial.

Somalia has expressed strong support for internationally recognized referee Omar Artan after he was denied entry into the United States, preventing him from officiating at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, a development that has triggered diplomatic concern and disappointment within Somali sporting circles. The Somali Ministry of Sports said on Tuesday that it had “deep regret” over the decision and confirmed that it had engaged with both United States authorities and the world football governing body FIFA in an attempt to resolve the matter. However, the ministry said those efforts did not lead to a positive outcome, leaving Artan excluded from the tournament.

Artan, who was named men’s referee of the year in 2025 by the Confederation of African Football, had been selected among the 52 match officials appointed for the global tournament jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. He arrived at Miami International Airport on Saturday but was denied entry following an inspection by US border authorities, according to officials. A US State Department official later stated that Artan was deemed “associated with suspected members of terrorist organizations,” which made him ineligible for entry under US immigration regulations. The US Customs and Border Protection agency also confirmed that the decision followed a routine inspection process, without providing further details on the case.

The decision has drawn widespread attention in Somalia, where Artan has been regarded as one of the country’s most prominent sporting figures in recent years. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had previously praised him as “a symbol of inspiration for the new generation of Somalis,” reflecting the significance of his appointment to the World Cup officiating panel. Artan’s selection had been seen as a milestone for Somali football, marking what would have been the first time a Somali referee officiated at a FIFA World Cup finals.

His inclusion in the elite refereeing list was celebrated domestically as evidence of growing recognition of Somali officials in international sport. Following the incident, the Somali Ministry of Sports reiterated its “unwavering support” for Artan, stating that it has full confidence in his integrity, professionalism, and continued contribution to football both in Somalia and on the global stage. It added that “Artan represents the very best of Somali talent,” underscoring his role as a national sporting figure.

A source within the Confederation of African Football also noted that the continental body had no authority to intervene in the US decision, though it expressed sympathy for the referee. The situation has added to broader discussions around travel restrictions affecting athletes and officials in international competitions. The FIFA World Cup 2026, set to begin later this week across North America, is expected to proceed with its appointed refereeing panel, though Artan’s exclusion has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a landmark moment for Somali representation in global football officiating.
