FIFA President Labels Senegal Walk-Off “Unacceptable” in Dramatic AFCON Final
FIFA President Gianni Infantino strongly condemns Senegal players and staff for leaving the pitch in protest during the AFCON final.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Monday strongly condemned the conduct of several Senegal players and members of the technical staff following controversial scenes during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2026 final against Morocco.
The remarks came after a section of the Senegal team walked off the pitch in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco, an incident that briefly halted the match and overshadowed Senegal’s eventual title-winning performance.
In a statement issued to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Infantino described the scenes as “unacceptable”, stating that leaving the field of play in protest violates the spirit and regulations of the sport. “It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” he said.

Infantino also condemned acts of violence linked to the protest, stressing that such behaviour has no place in football. “Violence cannot be tolerated in our sport. It is simply not right,” the FIFA president added.
The AFCON final had already been marked by intense scrutiny over refereeing decisions, with both teams disputing key calls during the match. Senegal ultimately secured victory, but the controversy surrounding the penalty decision and subsequent walkout dominated post-match discussion.
African football authorities are expected to review the incident, with possible disciplinary action against those involved as governing bodies seek to uphold discipline and fair play in international competitions.
